When the “yellow cattle-truck” comes up
the hill, and all the girls
set their packs on the seats beside them,
enjoy the window view from an empty one.
“Scholar-athletes” who brush you aside
in the hall between classes
will turn affable by the twentieth reunion—
assuming any of that squad are still alive.
Scars the cystic acne leaves
can give the adult face character. Indeed,
someone might love you
in spite of them, or even because of them.
Teasing and bullying
will fade to a mere whisper, underneath
the recognitions yet to come.
I have been in your skin. It will thicken.
