A Long Night's Work Ahead by Rose Menyon Heflin

The ancient
lighthouse keeper
slowly
ascended
the stairs -
one at a time,
one at a time -
drenched in sweat,
grasping the railing
and silently
counting
to two hundred
and fifteen,
when he finally reached
the top,
only to find that
the summer night
had turned
stormy
and the waters
choppy,
with visibility
waning,
a dense,
impenetrable fog
bearing down
on his troubled,
aging mind.
