What I Wait For by Rich Heller

Every evening this week
at dusk she stands
by the kitchen window—

the dishes done—
listening to
the birds’ final calls,

waiting for the lone raccoon
to appear for a drink
at her tiny garden pond.

Her silhouette
in the darkening window
is what I wait for.

Rich Heller studied creative writing at the University of Pittsburgh. His poems and short stories have been published in over 25 literary journals.
